Information for dog and cat owners

2 March 2022

Under the new agreement signed with the SPA des Cantons, the Town of Sutton has entrusted the organization with the following services:

Issuance of dog licenses

In accordance with section 3 of By-law RM 410 – By-law concerning animal control (in French only), the owners of any dog living on the territory of Sutton must obtain a permit for the possession of the animal, and they may not possess more than two dogs at the same address:

  • The cost of the permit is $20 per year (+ $5 for the first year for the cost of the tag); the permit must be renewed each year.
  • A tag is given at the first registration and must be worn by the animal.
  • The request for a permit must be addressed directly to the SPA des Cantons and can be done online and by selecting the Town of Sutton.

Pet Complaint Management

The S.P.A des Cantons is now responsible for handling and following up on complaints concerning domestic animals, whether they be dangerous dogs or nuisances caused by a domestic animal.

Please note that the SPA does not handle cases involving wild animals (e.g.: foxes that are sick or suspected of having rabies), which must be addressed to the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs at 1-877-346-6763.

Stray cat or dog pick-up

The Townships Animal Control Society is responsible for picking up stray cats and dogs reported on our territory. In the case of cats, it participates in the CSR program which consists of capturing, sterilizing, treating, vaccinating and releasing cats so that they return to their environment in good health and without risk of reproduction.

Dog owners: Please use the bags!

30 March 2023

As soon as the snow melts, we have the unpleasant surprise of discovering numerous dog droppings, especially on the bike path, but also elsewhere on the public roads. We reiterate our request to dog owners to pick up after their dogs, for the public good and the respect of other users.

We would like to remind you that Article 35 of By-law number 226 concerning animals stipulates that it is MANDATORY to pick up your pet’s feces in parks, on public roads and on private property.

To this end, the Town provides free biodegradable bag dispensers in several public areas to pick up feces, as well as nearby garbage cans: please use them!

New off-leash dog ban measures at PENS

26 July 2023

The Parc d’environnement de Sutton (PENS) has strengthened its resources to enforce the ban on off-leash dog walking on its trails. New signs have been installed and park wardens, authorized by the Town, have been hired to enforce municipal regulations.

Walking your dog without a leash on the trails of the Parc d’environnement naturel de Sutton could result in a $200 fine.

Similarly, wild camping or campfires are also liable to a fine, as these prohibitions are designed to protect the environment and hikers.

Thanks to all hikers for their cooperation!

Dogs must be kept on a leash!

15 November 2023

Pending the construction of the future dog park (winning project of the participative budget) next year, we would like to remind dog owners that it is compulsory to keep your pet on a leash in public spaces, and particularly to ensure that you keep it under control in the presence of other people or other dogs.

Unfortunately, incidents involving dogs running at large and attacking other dogs on a leash continue to be reported. Any owner of a dog causing damage is liable to fines and/or prosecution.

We remind you that you can consult our information in the Dogs & Cats section on the home page of our website.

Thank you for your precious collaboration!
