A disaster is a natural catastrophic event that causes damage and can result in injuries or even fatalities. To this end, the Town of Sutton has a <strong>Municipal Civil Security Plan<\/strong>, prepared and updated by its Public Safety Department.  <\/p>\n<p>The Town of Sutton&#8217;s Municipal Civil Security Plan is tailored to the needs of our community. It aims to foster ongoing reflection on the disasters that threaten us, identify the necessary resources in case of need, build an organizational structure ready to act under all circumstances, and prepare personnel for rapid and effective intervention through a continuous training program. <\/p>\n<p>This emergency plan was developed in accordance with the <em>Civil Security Act<\/em> and in compliance with the provisions of the <em>Regulation on Alert and Mobilization Procedures and the Minimum Rescue Measures to Protect the Safety of Persons and Property in the Event of a Disaster<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tDisaster Survival Kits\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>In the event of a disaster or major incident within the Town&#8217;s territory (for example, a widespread power outage, a major storm, flooding, etc.), you must ensure you can be self-sufficient at home for the first 72 hours: it is important to prepare and keep an updated survival kit <strong>to meet your needs and those of your family for a period of three days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t<p>The Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec provide the public with various <strong>guides<\/strong> to help prepare for potential disasters that may require emergency services intervention over an extended period.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.preparez-vous.gc.ca\/\"  target=\"_self\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGovernment of Canada\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/securite-situations-urgence\/securite-civile\"  target=\"_self\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGovernment of Quebec\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tTo contact the Public Safety Department\t<\/h3>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tPublic Safety Department\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\">Information<\/h6>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Public Security Department is responsible for protecting lives, property, and the environment throughout the entire territory of Sutton, which also includes the municipality of Abercorn-for a total area of 274.5\u202fkm\u00b2 and a combined population of 5,124 people [source: MAMH, 2025]. Its mission is to reduce human and material losses by providing prevention and emergency response services. The department includes a brigade of about thirty volunteer firefighters and first responders who receive ongoing training. It is equipped with constantly upgraded tools and a fleet of emergency vehicles, including a 78&#8242; ladder truck, a pumper truck, a tanker, a rescue pickup truck, and a mobile command unit.   <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It provides regular fire <a href=\"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/services-aux-citoyens\/rapports-de-la-securite-publique\/securite-incendie\/\">prevention<\/a> services to the public, in accordance with the MRC Brome-Missisquoi fire safety cover plan.<\/li>\n<li>It inspects the territory to ensure that buildings and\/or properties comply with safety regulations.<\/li>\n<li>It manages <a href=\"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/services-aux-citoyens\/securite-incendie\/demande-de-permis-de-brulage\/\">burn permit requests <\/a>within the municipality.<\/li>\n<li>It responds to all types of fires (building, vehicle, forest, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>It responds to motor vehicle accidents to provide extrication services and assist paramedics and police.<\/li>\n<li>It provides 24\/7 first responder services.<\/li>\n<li>It carries out forest rescue operations.<\/li>\n<li>It is responsible for detecting hazardous materials and propane gas leaks.<\/li>\n<li> It provides assistance to neighbouring municipalities when needed, in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/en\/fire-mutual-aid-agreements\/\">Fire Safety Mutual Aid Agreement.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>It develops and updates th<a href=\"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/services-aux-citoyens\/rapports-de-la-securite-publique\/securite-civile\/\">e municipal civil security plan<\/a>, which organizes and structures emergency measures in the event of a disaster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Civil security involves risk management and the protection of people and property in the event of a disaster.
