{"id":117387,"date":"2026-07-27T12:07:58","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T16:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/?p=117387"},"modified":"2026-07-27T12:02:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T16:02:28","slug":"fraud-prevention-campaign-in-brome-missisquoi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/en\/fraud-prevention-campaign-in-brome-missisquoi\/","title":{"rendered":"Fraud Prevention Campaign in Brome-Missisquoi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Led by the Brome-Missisquoi Senior Citizens&#8217; Roundtable, the initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Brome-Missisquoi Regional County Municipality (RCM), Sant\u00e9 Qu\u00e9bec Estrie\u2013CHUS Community Organization Team, the Bromont Police Service, the S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec, the Towns of Cowansville and Sutton, and the Association qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise de d\u00e9fense des droits des personnes retrait\u00e9es et pr\u00e9retrait\u00e9es (AQDR Granby).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Preventing fraud means protecting the independence, safety, and dignity of older adults. By focusing on information and awareness, we are giving citizens the tools they need to recognize fraud attempts before it is too late,\u201d says Tania Szymanski, Community Development Advisor at the Brome-Missisquoi RCM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flyers distributed throughout the region<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 4,000 flyers will be distributed to help the public\u2014especially seniors and their loved ones\u2014recognize the most common scams and take the right steps to avoid them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Distribution will begin gradually over the summer as part of a phased rollout, before expanding across the entire region in the fall. The brochures will be available at a variety of locations frequently visited by the public, including municipal offices, pharmacies, community organizations, seniors&#8217; residences, health care facilities, and through numerous local partners, ensuring that this important information reaches as many people as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Simple tips for help recognize fraud<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brochure provides practical advice for preventing fraud: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Never share your PIN.<\/strong> No institution will ever ask you for your card numbers or your PIN. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No one (police, bank, lawyer, etc.) will come to your home to collect money or your cards. <strong>Verify any information with a family member or the relevant organization.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beware of calls from a \u201crelative in distress\u201d asking for money. <strong>Verify before acting. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Create a family password<\/strong> that you will use to verify the identity of a family member during a suspicious call. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t buy prepaid cards.<\/strong> No company requests this type of payment or refund (Visa, Google Play, Apple, etc.). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ignore text messages asking for money.<\/strong> Financial institutions and governments don not operate that way. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number displayed on your phone may be falsified. <strong>Stay alert.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"wp-rich-text-font-awesome-icon wp-font-awesome-icon\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" data-prefix=\"fas\" data-icon=\"circle-exclamation\" class=\"svg-inline--fa fa-circle-exclamation \" role=\"img\" viewBox=\"0 0 512 512\"><path fill=\"currentColor\" d=\"M256 512A256 256 0 1 0 256 0a256 256 0 1 0 0 512zm0-384c13.3 0 24 10.7 24 24l0 112c0 13.3-10.7 24-24 24s-24-10.7-24-24l0-112c0-13.3 10.7-24 24-24zM224 352a32 32 0 1 1 64 0 32 32 0 1 1 -64 0z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span>  <strong>If you have any doubts, if a situation seems suspicious, or if fraud is occurring and immediate action is required: call 9-1-1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A local initiative expanded to the entire region<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project originated from an awareness tool developed by the Bromont Police Service. Thanks to the openness and collaboration of local partners, the material was enhanced and adapted to reflect the realities of all municipalities across Brome-Missisquoi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This initiative demonstrates the importance of collaboration among municipal, community, police and health organizations in strengthening public safety and supporting older adults&#8217; independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is part of an effort of a broader effort to promote the well-being of older adults and prevent elder abuse.
