The “Bientraitance<\/strong> ” project is the brainchild of two committees from the Tables de concertation des a\u00een\u00e9s of the Val St-Fran\u00e7ois and Memphr\u00e9magog MRCs. The exhibition, which was previously in Cowansville and is due to tour the Eastern Townships, will raise awareness by visually presenting attitudes, gestures and words that cause harm (mistreatment) or, on the contrary, do good (bientraitance). <\/p>\n\n

A windy launch!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

In Sutton, the free-standing exhibition was launched on Monday, March 30, in mild but windy weather! Many people were on hand to show their support for elder care: council members, members of the administration and also representatives of the follow-up committee for the Politique des familles et des a\u00een\u00e9s<\/a> and local organizations that work directly or indirectly with our seniors. <\/p>\n\n

Mayor Robert Beno\u00eet<\/strong>, accompanied by councillors Marie-Jos\u00e9 Auclair and Elyse Boulanger, spoke about the different types of abuse that can be psychological, material, financial or other, and can come from loved ones. It is important to know how to recognize them, which is why he mentioned the tools that the Quebec government makes available to the public for this purpose (see below). <\/p>\n\n

Director of Recreation, Community Life and Culture, \u00c9lizabeth Deit<\/strong>who was responsible for coordinating the exhibition, explained why it is so appropriate for Sutton to host it: its educational aspect is in line with the objectives of the action plan<\/a> of the Town’s Family and Seniors Policy, notably that of contributing to the fight against mistreatment, abuse and intimidation of seniors (2.2). Furthermore, as an artistic performance, it also meets one of the objectives of the action plan<\/a> of the Cultural Policy, which is to welcome and encourage off-site projects (2.2.1). In this way, the exhibition demonstrates the wealth of possible links between leisure, culture and community life. <\/p>\n\n

Artist Isabelle Lambert<\/strong> shared her creative approach, inspired by her own experience and the training the selected artists received on elder abuse. Her magnificent drawing of her mother’s eyes is to be admired from afar as well as up close: look at the scene in every pupil! <\/p>\n\n

Nathalie Haman<\/strong>, facilitator of the Table de concertation des a\u00een\u00e9s de Brome-Missisquoi, came to talk about the project supported by CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS: an English-language version of the audio capsules will soon be added. She hopes to see the exhibition circulate in other municipalities. <\/p>\n\n

Let’s hope that the Bientraitance exhibition will be welcomed by many other municipalities, spreading the message of protecting our elders and promoting the visual arts throughout the Estrie region!<\/p>\n\n

Note<\/em>: The exhibition is accompanied by an audioguide consisting of 10 audio capsules containing explanations of the artistic approach of each work in relation to abuse. The audioguide must be downloaded from a QR code on the introductory panel. <\/p>\n\n

Tools to combat elder abuse<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n
