{"id":113551,"date":"2026-04-22T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/?p=113551"},"modified":"2026-04-22T08:22:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T12:22:40","slug":"earth-day-on-april-22-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/en\/earth-day-on-april-22-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"April 22: Earth Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Town of Sutton is renewing the various ecological actions it has been carrying out for several years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In May, the Town is taking up the Dandelion Challenge<\/strong>, inviting the public and municipalities not to mow their lawns in May until the dandelions have faded, to give pollinating insects a chance to feed abundantly on their pollen and nectar after the winter is over.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>On May 16, a distribution of free trees<\/strong> will once again be offered to Sutton residents: a news item on this subject will be published shortly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that this year, the Sutton Legion will be selling and distributing rainwater harvesting barrels as part of a fundraising event: see the news item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>History of Earth Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Earth Day was first celebrated on <strong>April 22, 1970<\/strong>, and is often considered the birth of the environmental movement. Today, more than a billion people in 193 countries take action every year on Earth Day. Over the years, Earth Day has become the largest participatory environmental movement on the planet.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1990, the creation of the association in Canada went hand in hand with the internationalization of the Earth Day movement. In Quebec, Earth Day has been celebrated since 1995 with a wide range of activities designed to raise awareness of environmental issues. With its ability to mobilize local players, the provincial organization has gone from strength to strength, <strong>developing numerous action programs on April 22 and every day<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, Jour de la Terre Qu\u00e9bec merged with the Canadian association and became <strong>Jour de la Terre Canada \/ Earth Day Canada<\/strong>, so that the environmental support programs carried out in Quebec can be extended throughout Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/earthday.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earth Day Canada<\/a> website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday April 22 is Earth Day!
