Brome-Missisquoi MRC Press release<\/strong> (free translation<\/em>) \u2013 \u201cThe message we want to get across to motorcyclists and motorists is this: please respect the peace and quiet of the local population,\u201d declared Patrick Melchior, MRC prefect, at a press conference held this morning in the center of the village of Sutton. A dozen police officers from the S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec carried out a major muffler control operation, issuing statements of offence for mufflers that did not comply with the Highway Safety Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome people modify their mufflers to increase engine noise, which is illegal, and the offender is liable to a fine,\u201d said Lieutenant Philippe Morin of the S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec. In fact, according to article 258 of the Highway Safety Code, all vehicles must be equipped with an exhaust system that complies with the standards established by regulation. The owner of a vehicle that is not equipped with a standard-compliant exhaust system is liable to a fine of $315.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under article 260 of the Highway Safety Code, it is also forbidden to perform or cause to be performed on a vehicle any operation that eliminates or reduces the efficiency of the exhaust system. The offender is liable to a fine of $315.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur police work consists of collaborating with communities to ensure their safety and tranquility,\u201d said Lieutenant Philippe Morin, director of the Brome-Missisquoi S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec station. “We have also set up a number of muffler control operations throughout the MRC to curb the excessive noise caused by certain motorcycles and cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s major operation is being carried out in collaboration with the S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec, the MRC and the town of Sutton. \u201cWe’re a friendly community, and we welcome motorcyclists and all visitors. But we also want them to respect the peaceful character of our municipality,” said Robert Benoit, mayor of Sutton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
