{"id":77745,"date":"2024-06-04T10:08:22","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T14:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/?p=77745"},"modified":"2025-09-09T11:59:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T15:59:05","slug":"important-things-to-know-before-proceeding-with-backfill-on-private-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/en\/important-things-to-know-before-proceeding-with-backfill-on-private-property\/","title":{"rendered":"Important things to know before proceeding with backfill on private property"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1) Validate the location where the fill will be delivered, and where it will be spread (backfilled);\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Forward a plan (can be homemade or handmade) with location to the inspector: <a href=\"mailto:enviro.urb@sutton.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enviro.urb@sutton.ca<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Examples of plans accepted: Google Earth images with delineation drawn on them, or surveyor&#8217;s plan of the land (normally supplied when the property is purchased) with delineation drawn on it;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plans can also be delivered in person to the Town Hall, or to the public works manager offering fill;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-11-color\">The location must be validated before the fill is spread out.<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-11-color\">Fills are forbidden in the following areas:<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-11-color\">Less than 15m from<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-11-color\"><strong><strong> a stream, pond, lake or wetland (riparian buffer strip)<\/strong><\/strong>;<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-11-color\">In areas with steep slopes (30% or more) and less than 10m from such areas<\/mark>.<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-11-color\"><strong><strong>A stockpile of more than ten (10) cubic metres must be located more than 4 metres from a street or drainage ditch, and more than 15 metres from the banks of a watercourse<\/strong><\/strong>;<\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-11-color\"><strong><strong>In a wooded area requiring tree cutting, unless authorized<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2) Indicate the number of trucks of fill planned; a municipal certificate of authorization may be required;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3) In agricultural zones, restrictions apply under the Act respecting the preservation of agricultural land;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CPTAQ authorization may be required, check with inspector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4) In the Mountain sector of the urban plan (Maple Street sector and surrounding area), only excavation and backfilling operations required for constructions, works and structures, and which have been the subject of a permit or certificate, are authorized;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5) Erosion and runoff control measures may be required in certain cases. The inspector will advise you if this is the case. In all cases :\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All soil and fill works must be built and laid out in such a way as not to erode, cause erosion or transport sediments and pollutants off-site, into the water system or onto the road network, including road surfaces, ditches and stormwater infrastructure;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any backfill must be sloped to prevent material from sliding, and must be grassed, seeded or planted once the work is completed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All material piles resulting from excavation must be covered with an impermeable fabric and\/or surrounded by a sediment fence to limit the transport of materials.
