The Quebec government is taking action on the ground by setting up vaccination operations to limit the spread of this variant of rabies in Quebec.  <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Photo-raton-laveur-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Photo-raton-laveur-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Photo-raton-laveur-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Photo-raton-laveur-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Photo-raton-laveur.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vaccination operation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/fr\/news-releases\/operation-de-vaccination-des-animaux-sauvages-en-estrie-et-en-monteregie-le-ministere-en-action-pour-lutter-contre-la-rage-du-raton-laveur-au-quebec-839892660.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-4-color\">The first operation will be carried out in 2025<\/mark><\/a>, from April 14 to 24, in 27 municipalities in the Eastern Townships and Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie. <\/strong>This vaccination operation is designed to continue the efforts begun in 2024 to immunize raccoons, skunks and foxes against raccoon rabies, and will help protect the health of the human population. It is part of an intervention plan that calls for several vaccination operations in 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabies is a fatal disease, both for humans and for wild and domestic animals. It can be prevented by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/agriculture-environnement-et-ressources-naturelles\/sante-animale\/maladies-animales\/liste-maladies-animales\/rage-chez-les-animaux#c37873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-4-color\">adopting safe behavior<\/mark><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Control operation: spreading vaccine baits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the operation, vaccine baits will be distributed on the ground by hand. Hand-spreading will take place from April 14 to 24, 2025, in wooded areas, along waterways, roads and agricultural fields, near abandoned buildings and, occasionally, near garbage cans. Teams from the Minist\u00e8re de l&#8217;Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs will cover an area of 1,100 <sup>km2<\/sup> to spread 75,000 vaccine baits.  <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"427\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Avis-operation-vaccination-raton-laveur-avril-2025.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93569\" style=\"width:502px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Avis-operation-vaccination-raton-laveur-avril-2025.jpg 427w, https:\/\/sutton.ca\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Avis-operation-vaccination-raton-laveur-avril-2025-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-4-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-contenu.quebec.ca\/cdn-contenu\/faune\/documents\/operation-vaccination-animaux-sauvages.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Notice of vaccination operation<\/a> <\/mark>(in French only) and advice to follow in presence of vaccine baits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADVICE FOR CITIZENS DURING VACCINATION OPERATION<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As vaccine baits are intended for wild animals, avoid handling them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The vaccine contained in the bait is safe, both for humans and for pets and the environment, and can under no circumstances transmit rabies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Although vaccine baits are very safe, if you come into contact with a broken vaccine bait:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash your hands and the part of your body that has come into contact with the bait with soap and water;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call the number on the back of the bait or Info-Sant\u00e9 811.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>RABIES CAN BE PREVENTED BY ADOPTING SAFE BEHAVIORS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are bitten, scratched or come into contact with the saliva of an animal, wash the wound, even if it seems minor, with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes. Promptly contact Info-Sant\u00e9 811 for appropriate medical follow-up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residents of the Eastern Townships and Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie can make an important contribution to the fight against raccoon rabies. They are invited to report raccoons, skunks and foxes that are dead or that<br>appear disoriented, injured, abnormally aggressive or paralyzed by calling at 1 877 346-6763 or by visiting Qu\u00e9bec.ca\/rageduratonlaveur.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never approach an unknown animal, wild or domestic, even if it looks harmless.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never touch the carcass of a wild animal with your bare hands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have your pet vaccinated against rabies by consulting your veterinarian.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take steps to avoid attracting unwelcome animals to your property (e.g. keep your outdoor garbage cans out of reach).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid moving unwelcome or seemingly orphaned animals, as you could spread diseases to other territories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consult a veterinarian in the event of a bite or contact between your pet and a wild animal likely to transmit rabies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reminder: report suspicious animals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-contenu.quebec.ca\/cdn-contenu\/faune\/Rage-chez-les-animaux\/documents\/liste-municipalites-visees-surveillance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-central-palette-4-color\">Our municipality is in the enhanced surveillance zone<\/mark><\/a> for raccoon rabies. The public is invited to report raccoons, skunks and foxes that are dead or appear disoriented, injured, abnormally aggressive or paralyzed. To report suspicious animals, call 1-877-346-6763, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or fill out the form, available 24\/7, online at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/agriculture-environment-and-natural-resources\/animal-health\/animal-diseases\/list-animal-diseases\/rabies-in-animals\/rabies-surveillance-operation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qu\u00e9bec.ca\/rageduratonlaveur<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a raccoon, skunk or fox is inadvertently transported into your territory (e.g., transporting goods) from another province or country, it&#8217;s also important to report it. The animal could be carrying rabies, even if it looks healthy.  <strong>It must not be released back into the wild.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It&#8217;s important not to move wild animals!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An apparently healthy animal can be infected with rabies and develop the disease days or even weeks later. If an animal is moved, it may contribute to spreading the disease to other municipalities. The risk of spreading raccoon rabies through the movement of wild or domestic animals (e.g. stray cats) is very high. Raccoons can also transmit the virus to humans, through bites or scratches, for example.
