First free screening of Open Air Cinema on July 3

We announced it on June 13: our free family cinema screenings under the stars are back this year, but at the Sutton School of Art instead of Veterans Park.

In fact, we have mandated the organization to host our 4 free family films as part of Les Nocturnes, its summer cinematic event.

A festive family experience

The screening location changes, but the format remains the same: the free Open Air Cinema screenings are presented on Thursday evenings, and consist of two films in French with English subtitles, and two films in English with French subtitles. However, each of these family evenings, combined with the Nocturnes, will start earlier to offer a complementary festive experience and short films.

Welcome and short films from 6:30 p.m.

To enable you to take full advantage of the activities on offer before the film, the site will open its doors at 6:30 pm. A convivial refreshment bar will welcome you for a preview, followed by two short films:

At 8 p.m. ALT CTRL DEL (5 min.) is the result of a cultural mediation project run by Sutton’s Maison de jeunes Le Spot. Between January and May 2025, a group of teenagers explored the impact of their use of and presence on social networks on their “real” lives, through encounters with various professional artists and experimentation with different artistic mediums. Through sewing, photography, video and pottery, they nurtured their well-being and developed their own vision of their online and real-life presence. You will have the chance to view their video work, produced in collaboration with artist Julie Lequin.

At 8:15 p.m. – À la découverte du ruisseau de Jackson (33 min.) is a documentary by Étienne Benoit, who spent a year exploring the trail of Jackson Creek, one of three tributaries of Cowansville’s Lac Davignon. In the form of an investigation mixed with a quest, the filmmaker follows the creek’s trail to retrace its features and history, while initiating a reflection on the broader question of the preservation, accessibility and privatization of our natural environments.

Open Air Cinema’s first free feature film at 9 p.m.

On Thursday, July 3, the first evening of Open Air Cinema combined with Les Nocturnes will offer a feature film in its original English version, with French subtitles:

The Young Victoria

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and released in 2009, this Anglo-American historical film traces the life of Queen Victoria of England, from her accession to the throne at the age of 18 to her marriage to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, her first cousin. This biographical film plunges us into the life of this extraordinary queen.

Screening starts: 9 p.m.
Duration: 1 h 45 min.
Main actors: Emily Blunt – Rupert Friend
Original English version with French subtitles
