Sutton on Water and Heat Alert: Update on Tuesday
The Town of Sutton would like to provide an update following its water restriction and extreme heat alert notice issued yesterday, Monday, August 12.
– TUESDAY, AUGUST 12 UPDATE AT 4:30 PM –
Reminder: read Monday’s full news story
Water Restriction Extended to the Entire Territory
- Monitoring water consumption over the last 24 hours in the Mountain sector reveals that water consumption is still far too high, even at night and despite our restriction notice!
- This observation is also valid in the Village sector where consumption is exceptionally high: even if our water resources in this sector are not threatened, they must be protected!
- Well owners must also be careful with their water consumption to avoid risking drying out their wells.
- In light of this situation, the Town today issued a PUBLIC NOTICE that prohibits at ALL times and across the ENTIRE territory of the Town of Sutton:
WATERING lawns and landscaping, including newly installed features;
USING any automatic watering system (these systems must be deactivated);
FILLING swimming pools, spas, or landscape (decorative) ponds;
USING residential water features, even at low flow;
Note: Water features at the municipal pool remain available as they use a water recovery system.
WASHING vehicles, driveways, access lanes, sidewalks, streets, patios, or exterior building walls;
ORGANIZING events such as “car wash” or offering washing services, whether free or for a fee.
Inspections will be carried out, and violation notices including penalties (ranging from $500 to $4000) may be issued in case of non-compliance with this notice in accordance with By-Law 345 concerning the use and preservation of drinking water.
Strict Prohibition of all Outdoor Fires
We remind you of the strict prohibition in effect against lighting any outdoor fire (open-air fire, fire with spark arrestor, fireworks, etc.).
If you see someone lighting a fire despite the prohibition, call 9-1-1. Everyone’s safety is at stake!
Extreme Heat: Precautions to Take
Consult Environment Canada forecasts.
Our measures this week:
- Tuesday + Wednesday: water features will remain open exceptionally until 10 p..m.;
- Tuesday + Wednesday: evening lap swims at the municipal pool are cancelled to offer open swims from 1:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to everyone;
- Umbrellas have been added around the pool to increase shade;
- Increased surveillance of Goyette-Hill Park is being carried out to prevent nighttime swimming (evening and night patrols);
- Tuesday and Wednesday: the day camp will be relocated to the Sutton School gymnasium. Parents have been notified;
- Tuesday and Wednesday: the Sutton Municipal and School Library will be closed because it does not have air conditioning.
Recommendations to avoid the harmful effects of heat:

- STAY WELL HYDRATED: Drink plenty of varied liquids (e.g., water, juice diluted with water, caffeine-free sports drinks) without waiting until you are thirsty or according to quantities indicated by your doctor;
- STAY COOL: Spend at least two hours a day in a cool place ( ideally with air conditioning). If you are outdoors, STAY IN THE SHADE;
- REDUCE PHYSICAL EXERTION: From 10 AM until evening, avoid intense physical activities outdoors;
- WEAR LIGHTWEIGHT AND LIGHT-COLORED CLOTHING;
- USE THE SPLASH PADS at Goyette-Hill Park;
- ENJOY FREE SWIMMING AT THE MUNICIPAL POOL (see above).
Please pay particular attention to more vulnerable people around you who might suffer from the heat.
