Extreme cold warning

We are going through a period of extreme cold: please take the necessary measures. Take precautions in the house and if you are outside (see the government of Quebec’s website : If you are at home : If you must go outside: Limit your electricity consumption Hydro-Québec recommends several measures between Friday afternoon and Saturday noon to help reduce energy demand, which is multiplied by the very cold weather. Take care of yourself and others!

Take precautions in the house and if you are outside

If you are at home :
- Heat your home as usual, and keep the room temperature at least 19°C.
- Caulk doors and windows to prevent cold air from entering; close blinds and curtains at night.
- If you use a wood stove or space heater, make sure the room is well ventilated.
- If you must use a generator, for example, in case of a power outage, install it outside your home or any inhabited
If you must go outside:
- Dress in layers of clothing. The clothing you put on over all the others should be windproof and waterproof.
- Take special care to cover your head, nose, mouth, neck, hands and feet. Wear boots that will keep your feet warm and prevent you from slipping and falling.
- Watch for signs of frostbite on your extremities.
- If you must use a vehicle, anticipate that you may have to stay out in the cold for a long time, for example if you break down or get stuck, and make sure you have the following personal items and equipment: a charged and working cell phone; sufficient quantities of bottled water, food and blankets; a shovel, snow broom and grip pads; and sufficient quantities of your medications, if you are taking them.
- Maintain a regular level of activity, such as walking constantly.
- Limit vigorous physical exertion, such as shoveling snow or running.
- If you must be outdoors for a long time, take breaks in warm, wind-free places.

- Reduce heating by one to two degrees Celsius, especially in unoccupied rooms in the house;
- Reduce the use of hot water;
- Postpone or reduce the use of major appliances, especially the clothes dryer and dishwasher, especially during peak hours between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
