Purpose of home fire prevention visits

Residential fire prevention visits aim to reduce the number of fires and their harmful consequences by ensuring that all residences comply with fire safety standards. This initiative not only protects property, it also protects lives.

What to expect during a prevention visit

  • Identification of firefighters: The firefighters who come to your home will be clearly identified. They will wear an official uniform and carry an identification card issued by Sutton’s Public Safety Department.
  • Smoke alarm verification: A working smoke alarm must be present on every floor of your home. Firefighters will check that these essential devices are in good condition and working properly.
  • Presence of a fire extinguisher: A fire extinguisher must be accessible and in good working order. The fire department will make sure it’s there, and can advise you on its location.
  • Carbon monoxide detectors: For homes equipped with heating systems or other sources of carbon monoxide, firefighters will check for the presence of a working carbon monoxide detector.
  • Prevention advice: During their visit, firefighters will provide advice on fire prevention, if required. They will also answer your questions about heating, electricity, evacuation plans and clearing exits.
