A major addition to our sports facilities
The Town of Sutton is very proud of the addition of this new sports court to the community’s infrastructure. The official speeches, held at noon to mark the event, spoke of the importance of meeting the needs of our youth, especially teenagers.
Mr. Jonathan Fortin, the Town of Sutton’s Assistant Director General, recapped the history of the project. In 2022, thanks to the great community mobilization, Sutton was crowned crowned the most active community in Quebec in ParticipACTION’s Community Better Challenge. The $15,000 prize won was used to partially finance the basketball court, which cost a total of around $60,000. Mr. Fortin also acknowledged the remarkable work of the Recreation, Community Life and Culture Department, as well as that of the Public Works and Fixed Assets Department, in completing this project.
District 2 Councillor Marie-Josée Auclair spoke on behalf of the Council, in the presence of Mayor Robert Benoît, Councillor Lynda Graham and Councillor Marc-André Blain. She explained the Council’s motivations for this great project: the Town is not only committed to encouraging physical activity amongst our youth, but also to giving them a place and a voice in the community. These orientations are reflected in the Town’s policies, actions and commitments.
Adding priority infrastructure and activities for teenagers is in fact part of the 2023-2027 action plan of the Family and Seniors Policy. As part of the policy update in 2022, young people were consulted directly at Goyette-Hill Park. Ms. Auclair also pointed out that the construction of the new basketball court was one of the clear commitments made by the Town when it obtained its Child Friendly Municipality certification in 2023.

Friendly competition: a great success
Starting at 11:30 a.m., everyone was invited to sign up for the friendly competition. Two matches took place:
- The 13-and-under age group opened the competition with a twenty minute, 4 vs. 4 match in which many baskets were scored. The match was friendly, collaborative and inclusive, with players of all levels!

- After a short break, a second match followed for the 14+ age group, played 5 vs. 5. This 30-minute game was very lively, much to the delight of the spectators. Some of the younger players who had played in the previous match even joined in, tireless as they were!

In all, more than 20 players took to the court in a spirit of good sportsmanship! Participation prizes were awarded to all players, who went home with basketballs, caps or chocolates.

Congratulations to all our valiant basketball players: we truly have talent in Sutton!
A festive and lively atmosphere
A DJ was on site for the whole event, adding to the festive atmosphere. Music accompanied the many players of all ages who enjoyed the basketball court before and after the competition.
Alongside the friendly basketball matches, young people and families present were invited to decorate pumpkins. Art materials and pumpkins of all sizes were provided, and the results are a testament to their creativity. A great way to prepare for Halloween!

All those present at the park were also able to enjoy the beautiful fall weather, with tasty hot dogs served by Sutton Brouërie: Oktoberfest and veggie sausages, coleslaw, homemade condiments… a real feast offered free of charge by the Town, along with drinks, fruit and veggies.

We would like to thank all those who took part in this festive, sporty and creative afternoon. If you haven’t already done so, we invite everyone to discover the new basketball court!
