April 22: Earth Day

Tuesday April 22 is Earth Day! It's an international day of action to protect the environment. At Sutton, nature is part of our DNA, and we strive to preserve it, individually and collectively.

The Town of Sutton is renewing the various ecological actions it has been carrying out for several years:

  • In May, the Town is taking up the Dandelion Challenge, inviting the public and municipalities not to mow their lawns in May until the dandelions have faded, to give pollinating insects a chance to feed abundantly on their pollen and nectar after the winter is over.
  • On May 16, a distribution of free trees will once again be offered to Sutton residents: a news item on this subject will be published shortly.

Note that this year, the Sutton Legion will be selling and distributing rainwater harvesting barrels as part of a fundraising event: see the news item.

History of Earth Day

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, and is often considered the birth of the environmental movement. Today, more than a billion people in 193 countries take action every year on Earth Day. Over the years, Earth Day has become the largest participatory environmental movement on the planet.

In 1990, the creation of the association in Canada went hand in hand with the internationalization of the Earth Day movement. In Quebec, Earth Day has been celebrated since 1995 with a wide range of activities designed to raise awareness of environmental issues. With its ability to mobilize local players, the provincial organization has gone from strength to strength, developing numerous action programs on April 22 and every day.

In 2019, Jour de la Terre Québec merged with the Canadian association and became Jour de la Terre Canada / Earth Day Canada, so that the environmental support programs carried out in Quebec can be extended throughout Canada.
