A second urban mural for Sutton!

On October 18, the Town of Sutton, with the Maison des jeunes “Le Spot” de Sutton (MDJ), proudly inaugurated a new urban mural entitled Total Eclipse, created by Sutton teenagers as part of the LE MUR I THE WALL cultural mediation project. This dazzling mural was painted on the wall of a building that adjoins the former Filtex site at 12 rue Dépôt.

Second edition of LE MUR project │ THE WALL

Following the success of the first urban mural, which has been on display since 2023 on the grounds of the John-Sleeth Community and Cultural Centre, the Town wanted to add a lasting embellishment to a place where citizens gather for special occasions. With the agreement of the building’s co-owners and the Planning and Sustainable Development Advisory Committee, the choice was made in favour of this wall overlooking the site of the Sutton Christmas Market.

For this second edition, the Town once again invited the Maison des jeunes “Le Spot” to join in on the project: ten teenagers, accompanied by professional muralist Izabelle Duguay, took part in the design and realization of this new urban mural.

At the inauguration, touching speeches were made. They paid tribute to the beauty of the work and to the remarkable contribution of the teenagers to the embellishment of their community. The Town is grateful for the presence of Monique Forgue, representative of the Honourable Pascale St-Onge, Member of Parliament for Brome-Missisquoi and Minister of Canadian Heritage, Marie-José Auclair, Councillor for District 2 and Acting Mayor, Lynda Graham, Councillor for District 5, Daniel Martin, Councillor for District 1, Roger Gervais and Pascal Picarda, co-owners of the building where the mural was painted, Izabelle Duguay, the mural artist and Lhénia Gagnon-Fleury, Director of the MDJ, who was accompanied by two animators and several young people. The Town administration was represented by Pascal Smith, General Director, Marie-Claude Plasse, Cultural Officer and project coordinator, and Isabelle Capmas, Communications Advisor.

Several steps to complete the project

  • Cleaning the wall: once the location had been decided, the Public Works and Fixed Assets
Department was put in charge of washing and painting the wall white to enhance the colours of the artwork.
  • Preparatory meeting: to define the concept, a meeting was held on September 19 at the Town Hall
between the young people taking part in the project, artist Izabelle Duguay
and Cultural Officer Marie-Claude Plasse. The artist presented her artistic
process and the mural projects she had already completed. The group of young
people were made aware of the importance of urban art as a communication tool
and a way to beautify their environment. The participants then shared
their ideas for the theme and the elements they wanted to see in the mural: the
total eclipse of last April 8 was their spontaneous choice and they wanted to
set it within nature composed of mountains, water and forest.
  • Sketch: following this meeting, the artist created a visual proposal in line with the young people’s ideas. This preparatory sketch was then presented to the Recreation, Community Life and Culture Department, as well as to the MDJ’s management and young participants, all of whom approved Izabelle Duguay’s proposal.
  • Mural production: the mural was completed in 4 days, between October 2 and 5. To begin with, the artist drew the sketch on the white wall, and then began painting in certain areas of the image. The teenagers joined in, helping to create elements and textures. Finally, Ms. Duguay, accompanied by her assistant Marc Leblanc, finished the mural in the dark on the last day. Many passers-by came to admire the work’s progress, encourage the artists and salute the final result.
