What will change in 2026

Recycling collection

As of January 2, 2026, the Brome-Missisquoi MRC (RCM) will be responsible for recycling collection in Sutton. Collection will no longer be by sector, but rather by zone.

What’s new for you?

  • This collection is no longer divided into sectors A, B, C and D, but into zones 1 and 2, as for organics.
  • The trucks contracted by the MRC to carry out this collection are from the NRJ company. These trucks are equipped with side-loading mechanical clamps: if your bin is not positioned correctly, it will not be collected (see instructions below on Positioning your bins).
  • A form will be available on our website in 2026 to address any complaints or requests relating solely to the collection of recyclable materials.
  • Zone 1: Wednesdays / Zone 2: Thursdays
  • To find out what to put in your recycling bin, consult Bac Impact.
  • Consult the 2026 annual collection calendar.
  • Consult the list of 2026 collection zones.

Waste collection

The Town will continue to take care of household garbage collection, once a month for each address, but from now on collection will only take place on Wednesdays for everyone.

What’s new for you?

  • Your garbage will be collected on Wednesdays only, one sector per week.
  • Area A: first Wednesday of the month / Area B: second Wednesday of the month / Area C: third Wednesday of the month / Area D: fourth Wednesday of the month.
  • Consult the 2026 annual collection calendar.
  • Consult the list of 2026 collection sectors.

Organics materials collection

The Town will take over the collection of organic materials (compost), previously entrusted to Matrec. Collection will take place at the same frequency. However, the collection day has changed.

What’s new for you?

Large household garbage collection

The Town continues to take charge of this collection but adds a third collection in summer to better serve the population. We remind you that no large household garbage should be left by the roadside outside collection day, under penalty of fine. Excess or unaccepted large items must be taken to the Cowansville Ecocentre.

What’s new for you?

Leaf and Christmas Tree Collection

The Town will continue to manage these two collections. There will be no change to tree collection, but dead leaves will be collected on request only, so that our Town employees will not have to travel all over the territory unnecessarily.

What’s new for you?

  • The two leaf collections, in spring and autumn, will be made exclusively on request: a form will be available online for this purpose in 2026, but people will also be able to make the request by telephone or e-mail to the Public Works and Capital Assets Department (instructions to come in 2026).
  • The autumn collection of fallen leaves has been postponed by two weeks, at citizens’ request: it will now take place at the beginning of November, instead of the end of October.
  • Consult the 2026 annual collection calendar.

Glass collection

No change.
The glass collection container remains available to all residents in the spring’s parking lot on Route 215. This collection allows glass to be recycled by separating it from other materials, thereby reducing contamination and facilitating recovery.

Important reminders:

  • Glass accepted: ONLY glass bottles and food containers are accepted. There is no need to remove labels and caps from bottles.
  • Glass refused: ALL other types of material, such as crockery, Pyrex, ceramics, porcelain, window glass, light bulbs and neon lights, are forbidden in the container.
  • If the container is missing, it is because it has been taken away to be emptied within a maximum of 24 hours: in this case, please be patient and come back the following day. Don’t leave any bottles or containers on the ground.

Collection of returnable beverage containers

Since 2022, the Quebec government, through Consignaction, has been modernizing and expanding the deposit system for beverage containers.

The current Consignaction sites for the return of returnable containers in the region are :

  • in Cowansville: 135, rue de Sherbrooke, local 101
  • in Bromont: 82, boulevard de Bromont, room G-101
  • in Farnham: 201, rue Principale Est, local 102

Please note that the IGA H. Després Sutton also accepts the return of certain returnable beverage containers.

To find out which beverage containers are returnable and how much of a deposit is refunded, visit the Brome-Missisquoi RCM’s Consignaction page.

Positioning your bins

It is essential that your bins are correctly positioned to ensure proper collection. If this is not the case, the contents of your bin will not be collected. Likewise, any object left in excess, above or beside the bin, will not be collected.

Here is a reminder of the important points to observe:

  • Place your bins at the curb or roadside, with the wheels and handles facing the house.
  • Keep a minimum distance of 60 cm (2 ft.) between bins and any adjacent object (including other bins).
  • Do not place any locking devices or heavy objects on the covers.
  • Bins must not weigh more than 91 kg.

Further information

Why these changes?
All these changes to the management of our collections follow the Quebec government’s decision to entrust Eco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) with the mandate of modernizing the selective collection system for recyclable materials throughout Quebec. ÉEQ has thus delegated responsibilities to the Brome-Missisquoi MRC, which has had repercussions on collection management within our municipality. These changes affect all Sutton residents.

Do you have any questions?
If you have any questions regarding this new information and the changes to the 2026 collection schedule, please do not hesitate to contact the Public Works and Capital Fixed Department by e-mail at [email protected] or by telephone at 450-538-2290, option 2.
