First Responders

The Public Security Department is responsible for protecting lives, property, and the environment throughout the entire territory of Sutton, which also includes the municipality of Abercorn—for a total area of 274.5 km² and a combined population of 5,124 people [source: MAMH, 2025]. Its mission is to reduce human and material losses by providing prevention and emergency response services. The department includes a brigade of about thirty volunteer firefighters and first responders who receive ongoing training. It is equipped with constantly upgraded tools and a fleet of emergency vehicles, including a 78’ ladder truck, a pumper truck, a tanker, a rescue pickup truck, and a mobile command unit.

• It provides regular fire prevention services to the public, in accordance with the MRC Brome-Missisquoi fire safety cover plan.
• It inspects the territory to ensure that buildings and/or properties comply with safety regulations.
• It manages burn permit requests within the municipality.
• It responds to all types of fires (building, vehicle, forest, etc.).
• It responds to motor vehicle accidents to provide extrication services and assist paramedics and police.
• It provides 24/7 first responder services.
• It carries out forest rescue operations.
• It is responsible for detecting hazardous materials and propane gas leaks.
• It provides assistance to neighbouring municipalities when needed, in accordance with the Fire Safety Mutual Aid Agreement.
• It develops and updates the municipal civil security plan, which organizes and structures emergency measures in the event of a disaster.
