Burning permit application

Before lighting a fire…
check your obligations

At any time of the year, you MUST apply for a burning permit whenever you wish

  • to have an outdoor fire
  • or use fireworks.

All outdoor fires and fireworks without a permit are subject to a fine.

You cannot ask for a permit or make any kind of outdoor fire (open fire, fire with spark arrestors, firework, etc.) if the SOPFEU fire danger index is yellow, orange or red (check below).

Do you know the differences between a fire in an outdoor fireplace and an open-air fire? Check the applicable rules.

How does it work?

The Fire Safety Department does not issue a physical document: permit requests are recorded internally.

If your request complies with current regulations, it is considered a valid permit.

This system applies within the municipalities of Sutton and Abercorn.

The permit is free of charge but mandatory, even in winter.

How to Submit a Request

Your request must be submitted at least 24 hours before the planned burning.

Three Ways to Submit a Request:

  • Online (recommended) — using the form below
  • By phone: 450-538-2290
  • In person at Town Hall reception during business hours

The permit is free of charge.

Conditions to Be Met

Before any fire:

  • Check the SOPFEU fire danger index
Note : en hiver, l’indice n’est pas publié. Le brûlage reste permis si la demande a été faite et que les règles sont respectées.

In winter, the index is not published. Burning is still permitted if a request has been submitted and the rules are followed.

  • Completely extinguish the fire at nightfall
  • Always keep the fire under supervision
  • Have appropriate equipment on hand to control the fire (hoses, tools, etc.)

The Fire Safety Department may refuse or suspend a permit at any time if conditions are deemed unsafe (strong winds, drought, etc.).

No permits are issued when the fire danger index is yellow, orange, or red (that is, high, very high, or extreme).

Before lighting a fire or using fireworks, make sure to:
