Job offer: Secretary in the land use planning and development service

Located in the MRC Brome-Missisquoi, the town of Sutton is a municipality of more than 4,000 permanent residents and more than 3,500 part-time residents. As part of a sustainable development and landscape protection approach, the Town of Sutton is presently looking for a candidate to fulfill a position of:

SECRETARY IN THE LAND USE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT SERVICE

Under the authority of the Director of Urbanism and Land-Use Planning the person holding the position is responsible for performing certain clerical tasks in support of the employees in the department, in particular the following tasks:

Roles and responsibilities

  • Have strong secretarial skills in basic secretarial functions such as writing, presentation, filing correspondence and files, taking and transmitting messages;
  • Answer citizens’ questions or direct them to the right resource and, if necessary, provide them with the required information;
  • Provide information on permit applications, complete permit applications and forward permits, authorizations and resolutions to applicants;
  • Provide secretarial services for the Toponymy Committee;
  • Be responsible for classifying and updating permit files, including requests related to the Act respecting Access to documents held by public bodies and the Protection of personal information;
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports for the Council (summary of permits issued);
  • Translate short texts and correspondence from French to English.

Education and experience

  • Hold a diploma in professional studies (DPS) in the secretarial field or any other training deemed equivalent; 

Skills and qualifications

  • Knowledge about the municipal sector and customer service is an asset;
  • Knowledge in town planning is an asset;
  • Fluency in spoken and written French and English;
  • Master Microsoft Office software;
  • Having a good knowledge of permit software and PG geomatics is an asset;
  • Having a good knowledge of SyGED PG software is an asset
  • The qualities sought are the ability to work as part of a team, have excellent communication skills when dealing with the public, be punctual, have organizational skills, have initiative and be autonomous.

Working conditions

  • Permanent position, full-time (35 hours/week) from 8:30 am to noon and 1 pm to 4:30 pm
  • Starting as soon as possible.
  • Salary and benefits according to the collective agreement in force.

PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER—TEMPORARY POSITION

Job description:

Under the authority of the Foreman, the candidate of this position will be performing different tasks such as general maintenance of public parks, green spaces and municipal infrastructure.

This list represents the tasks related to this position. Despite this description, the employee can be asked to do all other related tasks asked by his (her) supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s licence.
  • Be able to work alone, or with a team and has a good sense of organization.
  • Must be available for overtime work if needed.
  • Have ability to communicate well with the public, bilingualism English/French required.
  • Have experience or horticultural knowledge (an asset).
  • Must be resourceful, self-sufficient and have good judgment.

Employment conditions:

  • Temporary position for six (6) months—full-time from Thursday to Sunday (32 hours/week).
  • Salary: according to the current collective agreement.

QUALIFIED WORKER

Job Description

Under the authority of the Foreman and the Team Leader, the candidate of this position will be performing different tasks such as general manual maintenance work, repairs and improvements of the municipal infrastructure like road system, aqueduct and sewage systems, household garbage and recycling pickup, etc. The candidate of this position will also be operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe excavator, wheel loader or an excavator. He may also be driving a transport truck.

This list represents the tasks related to this position. In addition to this description, the employee can be asked to do all other related tasks asked by his (her) supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid class 3 driver’s licence (minimum); a valid class 3 manual or class 1 driver’s licence will be decisive assets;
  • Have an experience as a heavy equipment operator particularly with a loader;
  • Have and experience as a heavy vehicle driver;
  • Have an experience in snow removal;
  • Be able to work alone, or with a team and good sense of organization;
  • Must be available for overtime work, especially during winter (snow removal);
  • Have ability to communicate well with the public, bilingualism English/French required;
  • Must be resourceful, self-sufficient and have good judgment.

Employment conditions

  • Permanent full-time position (40 hours/week);
  • Salary: according to the current collective agreement.

The Town of Sutton is currently looking for people 18 years of age and older to fill its electoral staff list for the municipal elections to be held on November 7, 2021.

Vacant positions

The returning officer is recruiting for the following positions:

• Deputy returning officer;
• Secretary of the polling station;
• Information and law enforcement officer (PRIMO);
• Member of an identity verification panel.

Applications will be evaluated by the returning officer who will allocate positions according to established criteria.

Conditions and requirements

People must be available on October 31 (9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.), November 7 (9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and possibly on another date to be determined (9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.).

One or more paid training will also be given. Date(s) to be determined between October 4 and November 1.

Those who agree to fill these temporary positions will be entitled to remuneration and a record of employment will be sent to them at the end of the election period. As they play an important role in the management of electoral operations, they must refrain from all partisan activity while performing their duties.

Before applying as a member of the electoral staff, make sure you fulfill the conditions set out in the Act respecting Elections and Referendums in Municipalities. Certain provisions of this Law could prevent you from submitting your candidacy, for example, if you already hold an elective position in another municipality. Also, by virtue of article 69 of this Law, “A person is not qualified to hold office as an election officer of any municipality if he is convicted of an offence that is a corrupt electoral practice within the meaning of section 645 the Act respecting school elections to elect certain members of the boards of directors of English-language school service centres (chapter E-2.3) or the Election Act (chapter E-3.3)”.
