Residual Material Collections
The Town of Sutton cares deeply about the environment and is committed to sound management of its residual material collection. In its ongoing effort to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, the Town of Sutton, in partnership with the Brome-Missisquoi MRC (RCM), provides its citizens and businesses with various recycling services.
Following new government guidelines, significant changes to your residual material collection will take effect on January 2, 2026. These changes affect all residents of Sutton.

Collection instructions
Positioning
It is essential that your bins are correctly positioned to ensure smooth collection operations.
Wheeled bins must be removed on the day of collection.
Please be careful how you arrange your bins:
- On collection day, place your bins at the curb before 7 a.m (6 a.m. for the recycling collection),
- Place your bins at the curb or roadside, with the wheels facing the house.
- Keep a minimum distance of 60 cm (2 ft) between bins or any nearby objects (including other bins).
- Do not place any locking devices or heavy objects on the covers.
- Bins must not weigh more than 91 kg.
In Winter
It is your responsibility to properly remove the snow and ice from your bins or containers to ensure they are collected by our garbage collectors. Remind your snow removal service not to push or blow snow on your bins or containers.
During a winter storm, we strongly recommend that you place your wheeled bins at the curb on the morning of collection. This will reduce the risk of your bins being knocked over by our snow removal crews, prevent breakage and, above all, ensure the safe collection of your materials.
Types of collection
Recyclables (blue bin)
As of January 2, 2026, the Brome-Missisquoi MRC will be responsible for recycling collection in Sutton. Bi-weekly collection will no longer be based on sectors, but on zones.
- Zone 1: Wednesdays
- Zone 2: Thursdays
Please note that recycling collection begins at 6 a.m. (not at 7 a.m. like the other collections). You must therefore put your bin out before 6 a.m.
To report a problem related to the collection of your recyclable materials (blue bins only) - examples: broken, lost, or damaged bin, collection not performed - you must complete this online form from the Brome-Missisquoi RCM:
Submit a citizen request (in French only)
You can also report any issues directly to Sutton Public Works and Fixed Assets Department by phone at 450-538-2290, option 2, or by email at [email protected].
Garbage (black bin)
Household waste collection is once a month for each address.
From January 2, 2026, your household waste will be collected on Wednesdays only, one sector per week.
- Sector A: first Wednesday of the month
- Sector B: second Wednesday of the month
- Sector C: third Wednesday of the month
- Secteur D : quatrième mercredi du mois
Note: please make sure you sort your waste so that items deposited in the black bin do not instead go in the recycling bin, the compost bin or to the Ecocenter. Thank you for helping us divert residual materials from landfill!
Organic materials (brown bin)
As of January 2, 2026, the Town will take over the collection of organic materials (compost), previously entrusted to Matrec. Collections will take place at the same frequency. However, the collection day will change.
Your organic materials will be collected on Mondays and Tuesdays, depending on the zone:
- Zone 1: Mondays
- Zone 2: Tuesdays
Collection frequency :
- Bi-weekly, January to April and November to December
- Once a week from May to October.
Large Household Garbage (bulky items)
In 2026, a third large household collection has been added to the usual two collections per sector.
However, the July collection will be by request only: a form will be available online for this purpose, but people can also make the request by telephone or e-mail to the Public Works and Fixed Assets Department (instructions to come in 2026).
We remind you that no bulky items should be left by the roadside outside collection day, on pain of a fine.
Important reminders:
- You must place your large items at the curb the day before or before 7 a.m. on the morning of the collection date.
- The maximum limit is five (5) bulky items per address.
- Building materials, electronics, aggregates, recyclables, tires and hazardous waste (HHW) must be brought to the Cowansville Regional Ecocentre (check details and opening hours).
- Excessive or unaccepted bulky items will not be picked up.
- You will need to remove any uncollected items from the roadside.
- Visit the list of refused items before depositing them at the curb.
Dead Leaves and Christmas Trees
Leaf collection
There are two leaf collection rounds per year, one in the spring and one in the fall. The dates are listed in our annual collection schedule.
Starting in the fall of 2026, collection will be available exclusively upon request: a form will be available online for this purpose, or residents may submit a request by phone or email to the Public Works and Fixed Assets Department (form to come).
You must use paper bags without tape, otherwise your bags will not be collected. Your bags must be at the curb before 7:00 a.m. on the morning of the collection.
Christmas tree collection
Consult the 2026 collection calendar. to find out when Christmas trees will be collected. Please note that trees must be stripped of all decorations.
Glass
The glass collection container is available to all citizens in the parking lot of the source on Route 215.
This collection allows glass to be recycled by separating it from other materials, thereby reducing contamination and facilitating recovery.
- Glass accepted: ONLY glass bottles and food containers are accepted. There is no need to remove labels and caps from bottles.
- Glass refused: ALL other types of material, such as crockery, Pyrex, ceramics, porcelain, window glass, light bulbs, neon lights, are forbidden in the container.
If the container is missing, it is because it's been taken away to be emptied. It will be replaced within a maximum of 24 hours. In this case, please be patient and come back later or the next day. Do not leave any bottles or containers on the ground.
Returnable Beverage Containers
Since 2022, the Quebec government, through Consignaction, has been modernizing and expanding the deposit system for beverage containers.
