SUTTON, March 15, 2023—The Minister responsible for Housing, Ms. France-Élaine Duranceau, the Minister responsible for Sport, Recreation and Outdoors and MNA for Brome-Missisquoi, Ms. Isabelle Charest, and the Minister of Public Security and Minister responsible for the Eastern Townships, Mr. François Bonnardel, are proud to highlight the start of construction of 18 social and affordable housing units for families in Sutton. This is a total investment of nearly $8 million.

The Quebec government, through the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ), is allocating nearly $2.1 million to the organization behind the project, Les Habitations Abordables Sutton, as part of its AccèsLogis Québec program. The SHQ also guaranteed the mortgage loan contracted by the organization.

For its part, the City of Sutton is providing nearly $5.1 million to the project, of which approximately $4.4 million comes from the envelopes of the tripartite agreements that the municipality has signed with the SHQ and the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation.

Quote:

“These 18 social and affordable housing units will soon allow families to benefit from safe, affordable housing in their community. I congratulate Les Habitations Abordables Sutton and their partners who, with the collaboration of the Société d’habitation du Québec, have set up this project.”

France-Élaine Duranceau, Minister responsible for Housing

“Our government is taking action to meet the housing needs of the citizens of our region. The construction of this new building was expected and will allow 18 low-income families to have a home. I congratulate the Town of Sutton for its commitment and Les Habitations Abordables Sutton for the perseverance shown by its board of directors during the development of this long-term project.”

Isabelle Charest, Minister responsible for Sport, Recreation and Outdoors and MNA for Brome-Missisquoi

“The issue of social and affordable housing is a very important one in our region. The project of Les Habitations Abordables Sutton responds to a major need. This proves once again our willingness as a government to support accessible housing projects throughout the Eastern Townships.”

François Bonnardel, Minister of Public Security and Minister responsible for the Estrie region

“This project is the first part of the municipal strategy to increase the number of social and affordable housing units in the heart of the village. Congratulations to Kenneth Hill and his team for their resilience.”

Robert Benoît, Mayor of Sutton

“I would like to thank all of our partners who have been with us throughout this adventure, which has allowed us to realize this beautiful affordable housing project for our home that is Sutton.”

Kenneth Hill, President of Habitations Abordables Sutton

Highlight:

  • Up to 14 of the 18 households that will occupy this building could benefit from the SHQ’s Rent Supplement Program, which would allow them to pay only 25% of their income for housing. This additional assistance of nearly $241,000, spread over five years, is assumed 90% by the SHQ and 10% by the Town of Sutton.
