Early Childhood Week and World Children’s Day: review of the third commitment as a Child Friendly City (CFC)

Today, Wednesday November 20, is World Children’s Day. To mark this important celebration, two flags were raised on the Sutton mast, and an intergenerational activity took place, bringing together FADOQ Les Deux monts members and children from the Jardin d’enfants de Sutton. On October 20, 2023, the Town of Sutton was awarded the prestigious Child Friendly City (CFC) certification by Espace MUNI in collaboration with UNICEF Canada. To obtain this certification, an application was submitted, presenting numerous actions already implemented by the Town, as well as four clear commitments to improve the quality of life of the community’s children, in line with the Families and Seniors Policy and its 2023-2027 action plan. One year later, in this 9th edition of the Early Childhood Week, we present the four commitments made to obtain the CFC certification and the achievements made in this regard. Earlier this week, we presented the progress of the GagnĂ© Park redesign project as well as the safety measures implemented to access Goyette-Hill Park during the redevelopment of the northern part of Western Street. Third commitment : Celebrating World Children’s Day

World Children’s Day marks the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1989. The Convention consists of 54 articles decreeing children’s rights and the efforts of governments, the UN and other organizations to ensure that children enjoy every one of their rights.

The Town of Sutton is making numerous efforts in this direction, in particular by implementing the following actions:

  • Offering children the opportunity to share their opinions and ideas on issues that concern them, by consulting them on projects and by opening up voting to them as part of the participative budget.
  • Facilitating the integration of children with special needs into municipal activities such as day camp.
  • By offering free day camp places to low-income families, in collaboration with local organizations.
  • By contributing to children’s food security through concerted local projects.
  • By offering free or low-cost cultural and recreational activities.

An activity that brings generations together

To celebrate World Children’s Day, an activity bringing together FADOQ members and children from the Jardin d’enfants de Sutton was organized at the Town Hall this morning. The toddlers joined the seniors for their usual osteoporosis prevention exercise session. It was a wonderful moment of joy and exchange between the generations.

Two flags hoisted on the Sutton mast

Following this wonderful activity, everyone gathered outside to witness the solemn raising of the Child Friendly City flag and the Early Childhood Week flag, in the presence of council members.

The Town of Sutton thus joins many other towns in Quebec committed to respecting children’s rights and well-being.
