Raccoon rabies – Ban on moving certain wild animals

The Town of Sutton wishes to inform the public that we are one of the municipalities affected by the ban on moving or relocating certain wild animals, due to confirmed cases of raccoon rabies in the region.

Visuel rage raton laveur

Target animals (live)

  • Raccoons
  • Skunks
  • Foxes
  • Coyotes

⚠️ The ban also applies to the transportation of an injured, sick or orphaned animal to a shelter or rehabilitation center. Moving an animal constitutes an offence punishable by a fine.

Even an apparently healthy animal can be a carrier of the virus: signs of rabies can take several weeks or even months to appear.

⚠️ The ban is in force until August 6, 2026, and may be extended.

Call for vigilance

La rage peut affecter tous les mammifères. Elle peut donc se transmettre d’un animal infecté à l’humain.
If you’re a pet owner, have your dogs or cats vaccinated against rabies and keep their vaccinations up to date.
