Second year of the Municipal Intervention and Prevention Plan to Counter Vandalism
Adopted in May 2025, the Intervention and Prevention Plan to Counter Vandalism in Municipal Public Spaces was developed by the Recreation, Life Community and Culture Department to define a series of preventive measures as well as specific interventions to reduce mischief in our community. Updated for its second year, the Plan once again calls for concrete, concerted action with the various partners in the community.
Like many other towns, Sutton suffers from acts of vandalism of varying degrees of seriousness, each of which entails repair or clean-up costs. This is why, while intervening as soon as an act of vandalism is committed, the municipal administration also wishes to focus on prevention.
Long-term prevention and intervention measures:
Report
To make it easier to report acts of vandalism in our community, a form was introduced last year. Its use by Sutton residents is a simple and effective way of participating in the rapid response measures put in place.
To report an act of vandalism :
- Type sutton.ca/vandalism/ or
- Go to the Form to report graffiti or other acts of vandalism
- Use the QR code available on posters in public places
Remember, for any act of vandalism on private property, or any act you witness first-hand, you must call your local police department at 310-4141.
Act quickly
To maintain a harmonious living environment, the Town of Sutton aims to clean up or repair damage to public property (e.g. parks, buildings, municipal equipment, street furniture) as quickly as possible. Promptly cleaning up graffiti, in particular, prevents its proliferation and eliminates the attention desired by the graffiti artist.
New actions in 2026
In keeping with its focus on prevention, this year’s Intervention and Prevention Plan to Counter Vandalism proposes concrete actions to be carried out in conjunction with local stakeholders:
- Skatepark clean-up and inauguration of legal walls: in collaboration with Maison des jeunes Le spot, this project aims to clean up the graffiti currently present in the skatepark, and to define specific areas where urban art will be legal. These walls will be repainted by the Town on an annual basis, to encourage artistic expression in these areas. The project, which will also include the creation of murals on certain modules, will be inaugurated at a festive event in August. More details to come!
- Awareness-raising workshops for elementary school children: Sutton School, in collaboration with the Sûreté du Québec, plans to offer awareness-raising workshops for grade 5 and 6 students on the impact of vandalism and the possible repercussions for young people.
- Creation of a 4th mural as part of the Le mur | The Wall cultural mediation project: initiated in 2023 by the Recreation, Life Community and Culture Department and supported by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications, this project aims to beautify our municipality, as well as offering Sutton residents a unique experience of collective artistic creation in the company of a professional artist. The location of the next mural will be announced shortly!
The Town of Sutton is proud to work with its many partners
to maintain a harmonious living environment.
Thank you for your collaboration in doing the same!
