Call for vigilance: heat wave

Environment Canada has issued a special heat warning bulletin for the Eastern Townships and the Town of Sutton’s Emergency Measures Committee would like to remind the public of the precautions to be taken in case of extreme heat.

A hot and humid air mass will affect Quebec until Friday. During this period, maximum temperatures will approach 30 degrees Celsius while humidex values will oscillate between 36 and 40. In addition, nights will be warm and uncomfortable with lows near 20 degrees Celsius. Although we do not quite reach the criteria of an extreme heat wave, the heat is expected to last for a few more days.

The following are precautionary recommendations to avoid the harmful effects of the heat:

  1. DRINK WELL: Drink plenty of fluids of various kinds (e.g. water, juice diluted with water, sports drinks without caffeine) without waiting to be thirsty or according to the quantities indicated by the doctor;
  2. STAY COOL: Spend at least two hours a day in a cool place (ideally with air conditioning). When outside, STAND IN THE SHADE;
  3. REDUCE PHYSICAL EFFORT: From 10 a.m. until evening, avoid strenuous activity outdoors;
  4. USE THE WATER GAMES in Goyette-Hill Park;
  5. USE THE POOL at Goyette-Hill Park. Pool hours are available on the website;
  6. WEAR LIGHTWEIGHT AND LIGHT COLORED CLOTHING.

We also ask that you contact vulnerable people around you to ensure that they are safe.

The Town of Sutton’s Emergency Measures Committee is in “pre-alert” mode and will inform the population of any new measures via the Town’s website and Facebook page. For any emergency, call 9-1-1.
