Message from the Mayor – December 27, 2022

Dear fellow citizens,

We have been through quite a crisis together and I would like to take the time to thank you!

This impressive storm of December 23rd created major power outages in almost all of our territory, we were among the municipalities most affected. Fortunately, as of Wednesday noon, only 50 Hydro-Québec customers were still without power, compared to 4673 on the evening of the storm. We are pleased with this return to normal, but we do not forget those people who are still without power for five days now. Our services remain in action and vigilant.

I would like to thank you ALL from the bottom of my heart for having shown such courage, resilience and, above all, solidarity: our community has shown the full force of its spirit of mutual aid and we have received many beautiful testimonies of benevolence and assistance. Congratulations to you all!

At the Town Hall, we have not been idle and I would also like to thank all of our administrative staff, our blue collar workers, our firefighters and our first responders who have remained constantly on the alert and have done a considerable amount of work. In a first, but not a last, our council hall was transformed into a very well organized emergency welcome center under the leadership of our Director General. Over three days, the shelter welcomed more than a hundred people who came in search of warmth, a good cup of coffee, a muffin, an electrical outlet or a shower, but also comfort. This initiative was the right one: it answered a real need and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers and the members of the council present, as well as the CAB Sutton who collaborated wonderfully with us by delivering food and by going to ensure the safety of their most vulnerable clients.

In closing, I must thank all the teams from Hydro-Quebec who worked very hard and continue to work, sometimes under very difficult conditions. Thanks also to the neighboring towns of Bromont and Brome Lake who assisted us with materials.

Hoping that we will not have to go through this again soon, I wish you all to enjoy the rest of this festive season and, on behalf of the Municipal Council, I wish you all the best for the New Year 2023 which promises to be exciting!

Robert Benoît, Mayor of Sutton
