Sharing the road Car/Bike : Awareness campaign in Brome-Missisquoi

Press release – Cyclists and motorists alike will be out in force this summer on the roads of Brome-Missisquoi, discovering the picturesque landscapes and attractions that make up the charm of our region, which is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Wine Route. For all these road users to have a wonderful time, it’s important to share the road safely.

The main safety rules to be observed by cyclists are :

  • Ride in the same direction as cars and on the extreme right-hand side of the road.
  • Ride in line, one behind the other, maximum 15 per group.
  • Make sure you can be seen at all times.
  • Don’t use cell phones or headphones.
  • Obey all traffic signs, especially stop signs.

The main safety rules to be observed by motorists are :

  • Be patient and courteous.
  • Keep a distance of 1.5 m. between you and the cyclist when overtaking (it is permitted to cross the to pass a cyclist in a safe manner).
  • Respect a cyclist who is overtaking another cyclist.

Police officers will ensure that both cyclists and motorists comply with these rules by raising awareness, and can issue tickets in cases of non-compliance.

To ensure that residents and visitors alike have fond memories of their stay in our region, it’s essential to apply these few safety rules and spread the word. “I’d like to thank the police for their work in raising awareness, and I’d like to ask all road users to be cautious and considerate this summer. Our region will undoubtedly be much visited, and I’m convinced of the hospitality of the people of Brome-Missisquoi. Prevention is a win-win situation,” says Patrick Melchior, Prefect of the MRC.

Safety posters are posted in several parking lots used by cyclists. Videos, safety tips and maps are also available on the Tourisme Brome-Missisquoi / bicycle safety website.
