CHAPITRE 6 EVACUATION METHODS
ARTICLE 33. OWNER OBLIGATIONS

The evacuation exits must be maintained and must not be obstructed.
No person shall add an element to a means of evacuation the presence of which has the effect of reducing the safety of persons.

ARTICLE 47. SMOKE DETECTORS

There must be at least one functional smoke detector to code (CAN/ULC-S531-02):
a) in each room where we sleep when it is not part of the dwelling, except where it is a Care or detention facilities or where there is a fire alarm.
b) in each dwelling
c) on each floor of the building where it is more than 1 floor
d) When a floor of a dwelling comprises of rooms, between the rooms and the rest of the floor. If the rooms are served by a hallway, the smoke alarm must be installed in this hallway.

ARTICLE 48. MAINTENANCE OF THE SMOKE DETECTORS

The tenants of a building must maintain the smoke detectors in good working condition, ie replace the batteries when necessary.

ARTICLE 49. REPLACEMENT OF SMOKE DETECTORS

The smoke detectors must be replaced ten years after the date of manufacture indicated on the alarm by the manufacturer. They must be replaced if the date of manufacture does not appear on the detector, if they have been painted or if they are defective.

7. Do you have a carbon monoxide detector?*
Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced when a vehicle or device burns fuel such as gasoline, oil, natural gas, kerosene, propane and wood. CO is odourless, colourless, tasteless and non-irritating. It is impossible for a human being to detect its presence. It causes hundreds of poisoning annually in Quebec, about fifteen of which are fatal. Only a CO detector can detect its presence. A smoke detector does not protect against CO.

An evacuation plan is a drawing of each floor of your home that simplifies the evacuation of your residence, therefore increasing your chances of survival in case of a fire. All occupants must be familiar with the evacuation plan and it must be practiced at least once a year. A few safety procedures can also accompany your plan.
