A by-election for District 1 will be held on March 24, 2024. Only voters in district 1 can vote. For general information, please consult the following web pages:

Important dates to remember

February 9, 2024: Beginning of the electoral period and first day for reception of nomination papers
February 23, 2024: Last day for reception of nomination papers (deadline established at 4:30 p.m.)
February 23, 2024: Proclamation of election of candidates elected without opposition
March 8, 2024: Revision of the electoral list (see the public notice for the opening hours)
March 12, 2024: Revision of the electoral list (see the public notice for the opening hours)
March 17, 2024: Advance polling day (noon to 8:00 p.m.)
March 24, 2024: Polling day (10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.)
Electoral period ends at 8:00 p.m.

Qualified voters

To be eligible to vote, you must:

  • be 18 years old on March 24, 2024;

and on December 1st, 2023:

  • be a Canadian citizen;
  • not be under curatorship;
  • not be declared guilty of an infraction which constitutes an election fraud manoeuvre;

and, on this same date, you must fulfil one of the two (2) following conditions:

  • be domiciled in the Town of Sutton and, for at least six (6) months, in Quebec;
  • have been, for at least twelve (12) months, the owner of an immovable or the occupant of a business establishment, within the meaning of the Act respecting municipal taxation, situated in the territory of the Town of Sutton.

Non-domiciled electors

The sole owners of an immovable who are not domiciled in the territory of the municipality or of the RCM can be entered on the list of electors for the general election if they meet the following conditions:

  1. be 18 years of age on March 24, 2024:
  2. be a natural person, a Canadian citizen, not be under curatorship on December 1st, 2023 and, on that date, not have been convicted, over the last five years, of an offence that is a corrupt electoral practice:
  3. be the sole owner of an immovable situated in the territory of the municipality or the RCM for at least 12 months on December 1st, 2023:
  4. have sent to the Town of Sutton, before February 18, 2024, an application for entry by the sole owner of an immovable of the sole occupant of a business establishment (not domicilied)

The undivided co-owners of an immovable who are not domiciled in the territory of the municipality or of the RCM and who are not already entitled to be entered on the list of electors as the sole owner of an immovable or the sole occupant of a business establishment can be entered on the list of electors for the general election if they meet the following conditions:

  1. be 18 years of age on March 24, 2024:
  2. be a natural person, a Canadian citizen, not be under curatorship on December 1st, 2023 and, on that date, not have been convicted, over the last five years, of an offence that is a corrupt electoral practice:
  3. be the the undivided co-owner of an immovable situated in the territory of the municipality or the RCM for at least 12 months on December 1st, 2023:
  4. have designated by means of a power of attorney signed by the majority of the co-owners who are electors on February 18, 2024:
  5. have sent to the Town of Sutton, before February 18, 2024,  a power of attorney to designate the undivided co-owner of an immovable or the co-occupant of a business establishment (not domiciled)

Candidates

A person is eligible for office as a member of the council of a municipality if he is entitled to have his name entered on the list of electors of the municipality and if he has resided, continuously or not, in the territory of the municipality for at least the last twelve (12) months on December 1, 2023 of the calendar year in which a by-election is to be held.

Any person wishing to run for the office of councillor must make sure that nomination papers are filled out and filed at the office of the returning officer. Filing of nomination paper begins on February 9, 2024 and ends on February 23, 2024. Please refer to the Public Notice published on December 1st, 2023 for the opening hours of the office of the returning officer. However, the Act Respecting Elections and Referendums in Municipalities stipulates that the office of the returning officer must be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in continuous fashion, on February 23, 2024.

Important Notice

Any electoral district map available on this site is an administrative version, for your sole convenience. The official versions of these maps are kept at Town Hall, in the official copy of By-Law 268. In the event of a contradiction between an administrative version and an official version, the official version shall prevail.

Board of revisors

A board of revisors will be held on March 8 and 12, 2024.
To this end, a public notice has been published on the Town's website. This public notice indicates:

  • the conditions to be met to be an elector and have the right to be entered on the list of electors;
  • the place, days and times where the list of electors may be consulted and where applications for entry, striking off or correction may be submitted;
  • the documents required to support an application for entry, striking or correction.

Job Description

You can fill the following positions:

  • Deputy returning officer;
  • Poll clerk;
  • Member of a board of revisors checking the identity of the elector

Candidates will be evaluated by the returning officer who will assign the positions according to established criteria.

Requirements

Persons who agree to fill these temporary positions are entitled to remuneration and a record of employment is sent to them at the end of the election period. They play a role in the management of electoral operations and must refrain from any partisan activity while performing their duties.

Before applying for a position at the municipal elections, please make sure that you fulfill the requirements of the Act Respecting Elections and Referendums in Municipalities. Certain provisions in this Act may prevent you from applying; for example, if you already hold an elective position in another municipality.

Pursuant to section 69 of the Act Respecting Elections and Referendums in Municipalities, "A person is not qualified to hold office as an election officer of any municipality if he is convicted of an offence that is a corrupt electoral practice within the meaning of section 645, the Act respecting school elections (chapter E-2.3) or the Election Act (chapter E-3.3)".
