New: Free lifeguard training program offered at the municipal pool!

Starting in June, the Town of Sutton will be offering free Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid training directly at the Goyette-Hill Park pool. This new training program provides the certification needed to work poolside!  

With Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross certifications, you can become an assistant lifeguard and work at the pool from the age of 15! The Standard First Aid certificate is a prerequisite for enrolling in the National Lifeguard course, which allows you to work as a certified lifeguard from the age of 16.

The lifeguard profession

Working as a lifeguard at the Sutton pool means spending your summer outdoors in a beautiful park with a dynamic team!

The role of a lifeguard is to supervise swimmers to ensure their safety, react quickly in critical situations, provide first aid to injured persons and enforce pool rules to prevent accidents. 

Lifeguards are caring, responsible and knowledgeable! 

Bronze Medal certificate

In this program, candidates will learn four basic lifesaving components: judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Basic rescue techniques such as pulling and carrying will be taught. In addition, candidates will learn the basic knowledge used in critical situations with conscious and unconscious victims. 

Prerequisite: must be at least 13 years old or have successfully completed Bronze Star training. However, if you are a good swimmer and can demonstrate all the strokes and techniques of the Bronze Star level, you can register. An evaluation of your abilities will be performed during the first class.

Duration: 15 hours excluding final exam.

  • Friday June 21, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Sunday June 22, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Monday June 24, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Monday July 1st, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Exam schedule : 

  • Monday July 8, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Bronze Cross certificate

In this training course, basic components will be covered in depth, and pool supervision techniques will be taught. Candidates will also learn basic first-aid techniques for various types of victims. 

Prerequisite: valid Bronze Medallion certification.

Duration: 20 hours excluding final exam.

  • Monday July 15, 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
  • Monday, July 22, 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
  • Monday, July 29, 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
  • Monday August 5, 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
  • Monday August 12, 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Exam schedule: 

  • Monday August 19, 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

To take part in these courses, you need to bring a pocket mask, a whistle and a pair of swimming goggles. These items are not included with registration.

Standard First Aid Certificate

This course will be offered in September. Details of the schedule, prerequisites and duration will be published over the summer.

Online registration

Registration for these two courses will open on Monday June 3 at 1:30 pm for residents and homeowners and on Monday June 10 at 1:30 pm for non-residents. They will be held online via this plateform: Sutton (accescite.net).

Important !

If you or a family member registered for an aquatic activity or day camp in 2023, you must use the same account to register for an activity in 2024.

If you have not yet registered, it is essential to create your account on the platform at least 72 hours before registration opens. Your account will be approved within 72 working hours of its creation.

If necessary, consult the procedure to access your existing account or create a new one.

Free courses!  

This summer, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and General First Aid courses will be offered free of charge at the Sutton pool. A great opportunity to develop new skills and discover the lifeguard profession!
