Dust control application

The spreading of dust suppressant (calcium chloride) has begun on the 140 kilometers of gravel road in Sutton between May 26 and will last until the end of June 2021. Calcium chloride is a very effective dust suppressant that works by attracting moisture from the air and keeping it on the ground. This keeps the gravel moist and prevents dust from being kicked up onto the road.

For calcium chloride to be effective, it must be applied after the grader has passed and the road surface must be moist. If the road is too dry, the dust suppressant will not be effectively absorbed into the soil. That’s why the dust control operation takes several weeks to complete.
