Heat wave: precautions to take and special opening of the municipal swimming pool as of Wednesday, June 19, 2024!

The Town would also like to remind you of the precautions to take in case of extreme heat. In addition, the municipal pool will open early this Wednesday, June 19, 2024: come and cool off from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and from 1:15 to 6:30 p.m. from Friday to Sunday.

Recommendations to avoid the harmful effects of heat

  1. HYDRATE WELL: Drink plenty of a variety of fluids (e.g. water, juice diluted with water, caffeine-free sports drinks) without waiting to feel thirsty, or in the quantities indicated by your doctor;
  2. STAY COOL: Spend at least two hours a day in a cool place (ideally with air conditioning). If outside, STAY IN THE SHADOW;
  3. REDUCE PHYSICAL EFFORT: From 10 a.m. until evening, avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors;
  4. WEAR LIGHTWEIGHT and light-colored clothing;
  5. USE THE WATER GAMES at Goyette-Hill Park;
  6. USE THE POOL at Goyette-Hill Park: see the special schedule below.

Specific recommendations – indoors

As indicated by the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS, recent evidence shows that maintaining an indoor temperature of 31 °C or more is dangerous for elderly persons, those with chronic diseases, and those with significant mental health disorders.

How do you lower indoor temperature?

In preparation for a heat wave:

  • If possible, install a window air conditioner in at least one of the rooms.
  • Install thermal curtains, roller shutters, or solar window films to block heat and sunlight.

During a heat wave:

  • Keep curtains and blinds shut from 10 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. to block sunlight.
  • Keep windows closed from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. to trap cool air inside.
  • Open the windows at 8:00 p.m. to allow cool air to flow in, and use fans to circulate the air indoors.

Please make sure that the vulnerable people in your life are all right!

Stay alert for heat warnings! For emergencies, call 9-1-1.
