MAPAQ information on avian flu

To fowl owners

If you own fowls or a small bird farm, you should be aware that your birds are at risk of contracting the avian influenza virus, which causes avian flu. The virus has been detected in several Canadian provinces and is spreading rapidly. The Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) would like to remind you of the prevention and surveillance measures to protect your birds.

  • Please read the Notice of vigilance (in French).  You are invited to post the second page of the Notice in your facilities;
  • Also post this reminder sheet as a reminder of the basic rules to protect your farm from avian influenza.

Don’t wait to report signs of illness to your veterinarian: prevention and early detection of avian influenza are essential to avoid its spread.

If you do not have a veterinarian, you can consult the Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec or the Équipe québécoise de contrôle des maladies avicoles  website, or consult the following list: Soutien vétérinaire aux petits élevages d’oiseaux (gouv.qc.ca).

To all our citizens

In order to help the Ministry monitor the presence of the virus in Quebec, which could have consequences for poultry or human health, we invite you to report the presence of dead or dying birds on the territory of your municipality by calling 1 877 346 6763. Do not handle the bird while waiting for instructions. Thank you for your cooperation.
