Public Works Week, an opportunity to highlight the work of our team

From May 21 to 27, Public Works Week promotes and enhances the value of public works in Quebec. This is an opportunity for the Town of Sutton to salute the unceasing and rigorous work accomplished by the entire team of its Public Works and Fixed Assets Department!

Throughout the year, the department manages the collection of garbage, recyclables, large waste and glass. In the winter, it takes care of snow removal on all public streets and roads. At the same time, it prepares the planning of all upcoming work, small and large, such as those planned in the Three-year Program of Capital Expenditures (PTI). In early spring, he begins his busiest season.

Here’s a look at his 2023 program:

  • Adding a solar street light at the 215 source: done!
  • Sweeping of asphalt streets: done!
  • Pool repainting: done!
  • Flushing of the water mains in the mountain sector: done!
  • Flushing of the water mains in the village sector: in progress
  • Reloading of gravel roads: in progress
  • Application of dust control on the roads: starting May 25
  • Repair of asphalt (excluding national roads): starting mid-June
  • Street markings: during the month of June
  • Installation of markers in the middle of certain streets (speed warning, crosswalk or truck ban): after the street marking work
  • Replacement of culverts throughout the territory: started at the beginning of April, until mid-summer, at a rate of 2 to 3 culverts replaced per week
  • Maintenance and enhancement of green spaces and flowers on public lands: started at the end of April and will continue until the fall

Remember that our Public Works and Fixed Assets Department has 26 people at its busiest time. It requires 40% of our municipal budget and mobilizes 54% of our personnel, because Sutton has one of the largest territories in the region: 200 km of streets and roads to maintain and a population of approximately 8,000 people (permanent and seasonal residents) to serve.

Also, during this Public Works Week, if you feel like it, think of sending them a message of gratitude or greeting them when you pass them on the roads, because they deserve our encouragement!
