A quiz launched by the Commission de toponymie du Québec

On the occasion of Geographical Names Day, the Commission de toponymie has prepared a quiz on the place names of Québec (in French only). The Commission wishes to raise public awareness of the importance of geographical names as landmarks and elements of cultural heritage. Place names play an essential role in the preservation of history, language and culture.

The Commission is therefore inviting the public to test their knowledge of place names by November 30, 2021. To take the quiz, you must answer five questions with a choice of answers. Participants have a chance to win two books published by the Commission: La France et le Québec – Des noms de lieux en partage, which presents 235 place names found in both France and Quebec, and Parlers et paysages du Québec, a book that takes you on a journey through local words.

Created in 1912, the Commission de toponymie is responsible for the inventory and conservation of place names. It formalizes and disseminates them and advises the government on all matters relating to toponymy.
