Launch of LE MUR | THE WALL cultural mediation project

The Town of Sutton is pleased to announce the launch of the LE MUR | THE WALL a cultural mediation project, on which it has been working for the past year. For its first edition, the town is collaborating with the Maison des jeunes de Sutton (The Spot) to create the first urban mural, which will be installed in the park of the John-Sleeth Community and Cultural Center.

Creation of first mural with Maison des jeunes

Nine young people from the Maison des jeunes are participating in the creation of the mural in collaboration with professional muralist Boris Biberdzic. LE MUR | THE WALL includes three creative workshops and a vernissage event.

The first workshop of this mediation project took place on October 10th at the Maison de jeunes. Participants had the opportunity to meet Marie-Claude Plasse, the city’s cultural officer, and the artist who will guide the creation of the mural, Boris Biberdzic. The youngsters were introduced to the history and various aesthetics of graffiti and urban art. Mr. Biberdzic presented his artistic approach and several murals he has created. Following a brainstorming session, the young people came up with the themes and values they would like to highlight in this urban street art. The next meetings will be used to complete the visual design of the artwork and to create the mural on a removable wall.

In mid-November, a vernissage will be held to inaugurate the urban mural, which will later be installed outdoors in the park of the John-Sleeth Community and Cultural Center. This event will enable parents, families and friends of the participants to celebrate the efforts and work of the young people involved in the project.

LE MUR | THE WALL

Street art is increasingly used by artists to communicate. It has taken its place on the visual scene of cities, where it can be used as an exceptional tool to embellish places. For those reasons, the Town of Sutton’s Recreation, Community Life and Culture Department has decided to create the LE MUR | THE WALL cultural mediation project, which can be implemented with different groups of citizens.

The aim is not only to beautify our municipality, but also to enable Sutton residents to enjoy a unique experience of collective artistic creation in the company of a professional artist. This unifying project, in addition to contributing to the development of public space, will create links within our community and our living environment.

The Leisure, Community Life and Culture Department would like to thank the contributors to this project: the Board of Directors, the management and the animators of the Maison des jeunes de Sutton, the artist Boris Biberdzic and the Public Works and Fixed Assets Department.
