Warning from the Sûreté du Québec of bogus e-mail bomb threats
The Sûreté du Québec wishes to inform the public of a case of bogus e-mail bomb threats circulating in Canada.
Since the end of October 2023, a mass e-mail broadcasting a bomb threat has been circulating in Canada. A monetary ransom is demanded by the sender for the location of the bombs.
Emails were sent to several schools, but also to other organizations (businesses, booking platforms, etc.).
Provinces and regions targeted to date include Ontario, Manitoba, Montreal, Quebec City, Eastern and Central Quebec, Mauricie, Montérégie, Outaouais and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Multiple checks were carried out by police at the targeted locations, and no explosive devices were found.
The Sûreté du Québec is currently coordinating an investigation in collaboration with several police forces across the province. They are asking organizations, establishments and/or citizens not to respond to these e-mails. If you are targeted by this type of e-mail, they invite you to contact your local police force.
